दीपिका ने एक इंटरव्यू में उस वक्त बताया था, 'शुरू-शुरू में हमें यह अंदाजा नहीं था कि यह धारावाहिक इतना मशहूर हो जाएगा। तब लोग टीवी को इडियट बॉक्स कहते थे। टीवी मीडियम को खास दर्जा हासिल नहीं था। 'रामायण' में सीता की भूमिका को कलाकार ज्यादा अहमियत नहीं दे रहे थे, लेकिन मैंने यह भूमिका यह सोचकर की कि दर्शकों के मन में सीता की एक लुभावनी छवि है।
Deepika had told in an interview at that time, 'Initially we had no idea that this serial would become so famous. People then called TV as Idiot Box. TV Medium did not have special status. The cast was not giving much importance to Sita's role in 'Ramayana', but I did this role thinking that the audience has a breathtaking image of Sita.
दीपिका ने आगे बताया था कि किरदारों का मेकअप, कॉस्ट्यूम और बॉडी लैंग्वेज सब हटकर थे। भाषा भी आम बोलचाल वाली हिंदी से अलग, एकदम शुद्ध हिंदी थी। दीपिका ने बताया था कि सीता के रोल के लिए उनका चुना जाना इतना आसान भी नहीं था। करीब 30-35 लड़कियां सीता के रोल के लिए स्क्रीन टेस्ट देने आईं थीं। दीपिका ने कहा था, "सीता के किरदार के लिए आईं अभिनेत्रियां काफी खूबसूरत, टैलेंटेड और ग्लैमरस थीं, मगर चुना मुझे गया। शायद मैं 'रामायण' की सीता की छवि के अनुकूल थी।निर्देशक रामानंद सागर ऐसे कलाकार चाहते थे, जो भूमिका में समा जाएं।"
Deepika further told that the makeup, costumes and body language of the characters were all different. The language was also pure Hindi, as opposed to the common spoken Hindi. Deepika had told that her selection for the role of Sita was not so easy. Around 30-35 girls came to give screen tests for Sita's role.Deepika had said, "The actresses who came for Sita's character were quite beautiful, talented and glamorous, but I was chosen. Deepika further stated that, 'Ramanand Sagar did not want a big and famous artist, but wanted him to do things in his serial, which are not very busy and easily available till the completion of the episode. Deepika had told, "We artists used to call each other with 'screen name' for a long time. Ramanand Ji also used to call us by screen name. He believed that doing so facilitates artists to delve deeper into their roles. "
गौरतलब है कि 'रामायण' की अधिकांश शूटिंग मुंबई से चार घंटे की दूरी पर स्थित उमरगांव में हुई थी। एक बहुत छोटा सा गांव, जहां ब्रेड जैसी आम चीज भी नहीं मिलती थी। दीपिका ने कहा था, 'हम सब कलाकार स्टूडियो में ही रहते थे, मानो एक लंबी पिकनिक पर आए हों।' बता दें कि 25 जनवरी 1987 को रविवार की सुबह दूरदर्शन पर सबसे पहली बार रामायण का प्रसारण हुआ था।
